European club football’s most prestigious prize is at stake this weekend in the UEFAChampions League final at Wembley Stadium in London. The all-German matchup ofBayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund promises plenty of intrigue, excitement and drama.
Bayern won the Bundesliga in fantastic style this season, setting several recordswhile blowing away the competition. After an early slip-up in the group stage against BATE Borisov, Bayern have been just as impressive in the Champions League, sweeping aside mighty Barcelona by a 7-0 aggregate score in the semifinals.
Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, won the Group of Death—which also contained Real Madrid, Manchester City and Ajax—before surviving Malaga in the quarterfinals and eliminating Real in the semis.
These teams know each other well. Dortmund won back-to-back Bundesliga titles before Bayern reclaimed the crown this season, when the teams drew both league meetings. As added spice, Dortmund’s Mario Gotze is set to switch sides in the summer and join Bayern, per BBC Sport.
