Finally a winner … Bayern Munich's Dutch midfielder Arjen Robben. Photograph: Andrew Yates/Getty
In the red corner: the Germans. In the yellow corner: also the Germans. As widely predicted it was a Champions League final awash with swagger, towel-draping lederhosen fanatics and – above all – dimly conceived off-field cliches as Bayern Munich beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at Wembley to become champions of Europe. Arjen Robben, who missed a penalty in last year's final, scored the winning goal in the 88th minute. Elsewhere, Barcelona reacted to talk of power shifts, new eras, thousand-year footballing Reichs and the like by signing next-big-thing Neymar from Santos. And in domestic matters, Crystal Palace won the Championship play-off final and will play in the Premier League next season.
